God sees

“Thereafter, Hagar used another name to refer to the Lord, who had spoken to her. She said, ‘You are the God who sees me.’ She also said, ‘Have I truly seen the One who sees me?'” (Genesis 16:13, NLT).

Hagar felt she got a bum rap from Sarai after she had been given to Abram as an underling wife. She felt lost, without hope and invisible, so she headed out to the desert to die, but God found and comforted her. He gave her hope and a future. It amazed Hagar that God actually saw her and cared enough to help.

Sometimes we all feel a bit invisible. But no matter how small or insignificant you may feel, rest assured God sees you. We are not invisible to him—no one is. God sees us and loves us, just as he saw Hagar that day long ago. He opened her eyes to see him as well, so she would know he was real. God doesn’t see as we do, but as only he can see – right into the heart.

  1. This is another one of my very favorite verses. This is the only time this name for God. .”El Roi” is used in the Bible. For people who might feel hopeless. . they can identify with Hagar’s plight. Feeling lost and as you mentioned, invisible only contributes to their hopelessness. But if they can come to the place where they can know that no matter what, God really does “see” them, really understands what they are going through, that thought alone can give them the hope they so desperately need.
