“And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them” (Romans 8:29, NLT).
A common misconception about God is that he brings trials and punishment on people to teach them lessons. They read this verse and believe those trials fit into this context. It is true God can turn bad things into good. He can redeem bad choices and horrible events, as we saw in the life of Joseph.
Just as we don’t purposely put our children in harmful or dangerous situations to teach them lessons, our loving Father doesn’t do that to us. He lets life happen, as much as we wish he didn’t, and through his wisdom and mercy, works it to our good. We can trust his goodness in every way.
