“We do this [run the race with endurance] by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith” (Hebrews 12:2a, NLT).
It’s hard to resist the notion that we are the ones who must have faith, we are responsible for increasing our faith and if our prayers aren’t answered the way we want, it’s our fault for not having enough faith. Many people are accused of lack of faith when their prayers aren’t answered and as a result, become quite discouraged.
The truth is Jesus is the one who gives us his faith – he is the author of faith. He is also the perfecter, which means he finishes it, bringing it to maturity and completion. It’s simply not necessary to worry about how much faith we have or get discouraged because it seems we don’t have as much as someone else. All we need to do is keep our eyes on Jesus – his faith is all we need.
