“For they drank from the spiritual rock that traveled with them, and that rock was Christ” (1 Corinthians 10:3b, NLT).
In the Old Testament, God is often called a rock. He is the rock of our salvation and we sing about the Rock of Ages. The image that comes to mind might be the Rock of Gibraltar, huge, strong, able to stand up to any and all elements.
The steady, dependable rock of the Israelites is the same rock we rely on today. Just as he was there for those who wandered the desert, he was there for the early church and is still here for us. That rock is Jesus, the spiritual rock who fills us when we’re hungry and quenches our thirst for the kind of food and drink only he can give. Someday the Rock of Gibraltar may fall into the ocean, but our Rock has been and always will be our tower of strength and our source of life.
