Beneath the Surface

I have nothing to add so I’m going to let this statement speak for itself:

“There is a way of ordering our mental life on more than one level at once. On one level, we can be thinking, discussing, seeing, calculating, meeting all the demands of external affairs, but deep within, behind the scenes at a profounder level we may also be in prayer and adoration, song and worship and a gentle receptiveness to divine breathing” (Thomas Kelly, Testament of Devotion).

  1. I love the subject of order and scriptures like Ps 119:133 Order my steps by your word and let not sin have rule over me. Also how God moved in the Genesis story and establish order out of the formless and void. J B Peterson has taught me that too much order is not good for you as you are limited in your sphere of order. We need a bit of chaos to expand to new territory and its potential for growth. Too much chaos is definitely bad for you.
Centering prayer or Contemplative prayer has taught me tremendously to be really still before God, to just be in silence before the Great I Am. Fr Thomas Keating and Fr Thomas Merton have been great mentors. I called them the Thomases in my life. Thomas Aquinas is a bit too heavy for me.
