God paid the ransom

“For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors” (1 Peter 1:18a, NLT).

In some parts of the world, kidnappings are frequent occurrences. Most of the time, the kidnappers demand a ransom, which the family may or not be able to pay. It can be a terrifying situation and is often portrayed in movies and television dramas. The anger, fear and helplessness of being held for ransom are unimaginable to the average person.

In a way, humanity was held for ransom by sin and as this verse says, to an empty life inherited from our ancestors, namely Adam and Eve. God is the rich relative who thought no price was too high to pay to get us back. He didn’t just pay the ransom with gold or silver but with the precious blood of his only son. And as God is Father, Son and Spirit, the life he gave was his own. He turned our anger, fear, helplessness and hopelessness into joy and peace by his generous, loving act on our behalf.
